Indian tennis star Sania Mirza’s father Imran who also manages her career, called off Sania’s engagement to Mohammed Sohrab Mirza. Sania Mirza hasn’t had the best of starts to the 2010 season – on and off court. A broken service game is one thing, but a broken engagement or a broken heart, is quite another.
Earlier this week, the 23-year-old father of Imran who coaches and manages Sania’s career, blasted his daughter’s engagement to Mohammed Sohrab Mirza. Sania was formally engaged with other Hyderabadi and lifelong friend, now studying business in the United Kingdom, at a luxury hotel near his home in July last year.
When approached Sania Mirza to comment, she said that she and Sohrab were longtime friend but after engagement they found themselves incompatible for life time bonding.and confirmed that a engagement was called off.
The 23-year-old Hyderabadi had got engaged to 24-year-old Sohrab who is from an influential business family in July last year.
“We were friends for years but found ourselves incompatible as a couple. I wish Sohrab the very best in life,” Sania said in a brief statement without elaborating on the exact reasons for the break up.
Sania’s father Imran Mirza said the two families who have been friends for years continue to be on good terms despite the couple’s split.
“The two families have known each other for over half a century. Despite the engagement not working out the friendship continues,” he said.
Sania said though they were friends for 5 years they found themselves incompatible during the engagement period, and that she wishes Sohrab the best in life.
Sohrab’s father Adil Mirza too confirmed the news saying that it was agreed to for the children’s mutual consent.
Sania will now have to focus wholly on her game, which has taken a hit in recent years. She will now fly to Kuala Lumpur on Friday, to participate in the Fed Cup Asia Oceania Group II competition that starts on 2nd February.
